“You Might Be A Caregiver If … “

… in the pages of which Lon Kieffer channels a little Jeff Foxworthy, talks a little Mother Teresa, adds some slightly manic humor, and provides a whole lot of sensible advice for those who care for others.

Lon does all this through the persona of Defender of Caregivers (DOC), a vaguely teddy-bearish entity which has one mission in life:  To help those who take care of others take care of themselves first.

This is not only a noble mission, it is possibly one of the most essential issues around caregiving.  I can speak from experience both as a professional helper and a personal caregiver at times.  Caring for others causes stress … and you more you feel the need to care, the more stress you are introducing to your life.

“You Might Be A Caregiver, if …” mixes three noteworthy elements:

1)  That slightly manic and very upbeat approach I mention above and which reflects Lon’s personality shines through on every single page.  I dare you not to like this guy.

2)  Solid research and knowledge.  This is no book of lofty-sounding, but empty “feel-good” phrases.  Lon knows the science behind what he is passionate about and this keeps the whole thing grounded in reality.

3)  True life stories sprinkled liberally around each chapter.    Not the “Chicken Soup” type stories with always upbeat endings, these stories run the gamut from inspiring to cautionary, and always help you understand the point of the moment.

Not in the book, but an extremely important aspect of all this is the Defenders of Caregivers Facebook group … community support at its best.  Visit this brave group and experience the power of sharing within a group of kindred souls.  You can’t buy this type of “medicine”.

I could go on about the value of this book for anyone who does for others, whether a nurse, counselor, social worker, or other paid professional, or just someone helping a loved one who needs attention, time, and loving care.

See The Ocean …. Be The Ocean …

Mindfulness practice means that we commit fully in each moment to be present; inviting ourselves to interface with this moment in full awareness, with the intention to embody as best we can an orientation of calmness, mindfulness, and equanimity right here and right now.”

― Jon Kabat-Zinn, Wherever You Go, There You Are

Sometimes you just have to look at a picture and lose yourself in being in that picture.

Watch the clouds move slowly across the sky …

Sense the gentle movement of the water …

Hear the wind blowing softly across the waves …

Feel the splash of the water and the glow of the sun …

Be with the ocean …

Relax …

Breathe slowly and deeply …

Repeat …

Mindfulness involves an element of stress reduction, a good dash of focus, and an unrelenting emphasis on just being in the moment, and not constantly evaluating the moment.

If you want to succeed in life, both personal and professional, you might want to learn a little more about how to do this ancient and yet very modern practice.

More is coming …

Today my Heartland is the Ocean ….
