Getting the July 4th Message Right . . .


This past weekend, we took some time to do something a little different as part of our July Fourth activities . . .

THE SETTING:

Rocheport is a very small river town just west of Columbia, Missouri with  several quaint shops and restaurants.  One could easily spend a relaxing and enjoyable weekend walking the streets of this quiet hamlet.

We were there for church.  Not just any service, but the monthly Bluegrass Worship, a joint venture of the Rocheport Christian Church and Broadway Christian Church in Columbia.

THE SERVICE:

The service was full of “old timey” music, with songs like “This Little Light of Mine” and “I’ll Fly Away“.  The singing was strong, simple tunes and powerful lyrics, with the crowd joining in on almost every line, even without PowerPoint slides to show the words:)   The musicians were accomplished artists using a variety of stringed instruments to make toe-tapping and nostalgic music from an earlier time, which speaks to me as the of my upbringing in small-town rural Missouri.
