There is a time for analytical thinking and careful consideration of options, along with detailed planning to insure that all potential barriers or snaps can be dealt with …
AND THERE IS A TIME TO DANCE … THE TRICK IS NOT TO CONFUSE THE TWO.
Sometimes our days have to be devoted to the mundane and the ordinary. The requirements of life, not always exciting, but usually necessary and often essential, call us to focus. We clean, we cook, we balance the checkbook, we sign the forms that we need to sign, we figure and file our taxes … you know, the usual stuff.
Every once in a while, though, we get to experience a moment. You know, one of those “head in the clouds” moments where we feel like we are dancing and strutting our way through that day.
… THE REAL TRICK IS TO FULLY UNDERSTAND THAT YOU GET TO CHOOSE HOW YOU APPROACH YOUR DAY.
Every day can be special in some way, if you simply approach your daily routine with fresh eyes, a sense of curiosity, and optimism about people and events.
Fresh eyes, which comes from being more mindful of where we are and what we are doing, allow us to see things we have seen many times before in a new way.
One of my favorite “cheap tricks” with a group to help them realize how routine our days can become is simple, but effective:
- Cross your arms.
- Now change which arm crosses over the other.
Chances are you will have to consciously think about how to change your arms. This works just fine with crossing legs too.
We live in a world where our daily conveniences are not as simple and easy to understand as previous generations could. Fortunately, this world also contains technology that allows us to more easily connect, collaborate, and communicate, so we have eliminated many of the reasons why we cannot learn about a thing that has captured our curiosity.
“I wonder why …” is a powerful question. Ask it often and about diverse things with which you come into contact during your day.
Better yet … act on what you learn.
When curiosity is pushing you in a direction, go happily along, learn what you can, and use that new knowledge to rework your view of thw world, share with others so they may know as well, and create a powerful feedback loop that will keep you asking and learning through all your days.
Our modern technological society has created the ability for us to know what is happening in the world easily and whenever we want to know.
Media thrive on sharing the different, the outrageous, and the violence … and we happily contribute to increased ratings for those things which are negative, nasty, and brutal in our world.
Meanwhile, acts of kindness, celebration, and community are happening constantly in every land.
CAVEAT: NEVER use this last point to justify ignoring or minimizing the real needs and troubles of the world.
I am just pointing out that positive things are not what we hear about through our varied print and online media sources. Actually, only a true optimist would even consider trying to heal the wounds and help the afflicted … others would simply give up and hide away from those realities.
HOW ARE YOU CHOOSING TO APPROACH THIS DAY?
Dancing through my day, fortunately where no one else can see me, in the Heartland ….
