Rocky Road Ahead …

Rocks - Morguefile“WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A STUMBLING BLOCK AND A STEPPING STONE?  THE WAY YOU APPROACH IT.”

English proverb

I have been considering rocks a lot lately …

ROCKS ARE INDEED SOMETIMES STUMBLING BLOCKS …

This is especially evident when many of them converge to create rocky terrain which must be traversed.  If you have ever found yourself trying to cross a rocky field, you know the dangers which are often not clear, but can result in nasty falls and broken bones.   At best, it takes time to get across and you have to make a special effort to insure that whatever you are carrying with you is safe and does not contribute to potential injury.

ROCKS CAN ALSO BE STEPPING STONES …

Stepping stones provide firm footing for us as we navigate sometimes difficult routes on the way to where we are going.  A stone, set firmly in the ground and at the right distance to move you across a stream or a patch of dense foliage, can be quite welcome and sometimes, even a life-saving tool.

Tall Rock - MorguefileLet me suggest two more roles for stones and rocks, based on my belief that you cannot stretch a metaphor too far …

A SOLID ROCK IS A FOUNDATION …

We build upon the solid rock below our feet, because we know it will not move or easily dissolve.  A solid piece of rock has been used as a metaphor for solid grounding for a very long time now and it still serves as an image to which we can cling.

A ROCK IS A VANTAGE POINT …

When we climb to the top of a very large rock, we have a place of safety from which we can see a long distance, around us and even to the stars,  It is not accident that human beings have always chosen to go up the mountain (very large rocks) for inspiration, observation, and to feel closer to those intangible aspects of being human.

ABOUT THAT LEADING QUOTATION …

The proverb rightly points out that, generally, things are just things.  A thing may be positive or negative in its impact and the way we perceive that thing is what makes the difference.  A rock is just a rock … until we make it into something else.  As one of my favorite Beatles (George) says, in one of my favorite filmsIt’s all in the mind, you know! “.

The size of the rock matters as well … pebbles can irritate the bottom of your feet and be slippery, but are usually easily swept aside or poured into colored glass containers and made decorations, and not deterrents.   A large rock may need to be worked around, incorporated into the design or plan, or simply used as a viewing point with a nice breeze.

What “rocks” are you encountering today?

How are you going to handle the rocks you come across today?

Why does it matter how you view those darned rocks in the first place?

Skipping lightly over pebbles in my way and climbing very large rocks to get a better view in the Heartland ….
