Happy Social Media Day …

Social MEdia Day 2015Mashable started this event a few years ago to celebrate the positive aspects of social media in people’s lives.  It’s a day to pause and reflect on a medium that did not exist in the recent past and has come to dominate much of our public and professional lives.

A few reasons why I am happy to celebrate Social Media Day:

Reconnecting with people from my past …

Staying in touch with family and friends …

Building relationships with people I’ve never physically met …

Learning about the diversity and complexity of life on our shared planet …

Getting more news about what is happening across town and on the other side of the planet …

Being reminded daily that the old rules still apply, even online:  Being nice to someone usually results in them being nice to you and being nasty almost always does the opposite …

Living and working in an environment where the playing field is truly more level and people’s voices are heard more than in the bricks-and-mortar world …

These are a few of my favorite things.  I hope you take a few minutes today and think about how social media has changed and what value it may bring into your life.

HOW HAS SOCIAL MEDIA AFFECTED YOUR LIFE?

… and if you do not feel that social media has brought value to your life, consider these questions:

How actively engaged online are you?

Do you share carefully, yet honestly?

Do you engage with others for entertainment, learning, personal growth, or just because you are bored?

Do you draw clear distinctions between your work and your personal interactions online?

Do you like people? (This is a critical question – if the answer is “No” or “Not Really”, consider whether a “Social” environment is really optimal for you.

Feeling rather good about my online life in the Heartland ….
