Oh, Be Nice …

Nice“When you truly understand the full power of nice, you realize that by treating others with kindness, respect, and generosity, your actions get paid back in one way or another with interest.“

Linda Thaler and Robin Koval in “The Power of Nice: How to Conquer the Business World With Kindness”

Yeah, yeah, I know … No hard-nosed business adage or forceful leadership prescription here.  No influencing others to bend to your will or the good of the organization in order to master your chosen market.   Not even a whiffle about identifying and meeting others needs in order to help them become all they can be.  This is “squishy” territory, my friends …

Just a simple suggestion with a simple promise .. Be Nice to Others and Nice Things Will Happen to You.

Good lord, who knows what might happen if this kind of “touchy-feely” thinking took hold?  We are traveling on very dangerous paths, one might even say a very dangerous slippery slope.  The possible ramifications boggle one’s mind …

Customer service representatives might take more time and try harder to do right by those they serve …

Customers might enter a transaction with different and maybe more realistic expectations …

People who have to work together might actually try to, you know, … work together more courteously.

Bosses might treat subordinates as real people, rather than just assets to be used and managed, then discarded or disregarded.

Employees might start to see managers as other human beings who are trying to make things work in challenging situations.

Politicians might actually try to honestly serve those who have elected them … okay, now I have really strayed way too deep into the surreal …

A note:  This does not promise that if you are nice to someone, they will be nice back to you.  That’s a transaction.   The promise here is that if you are nice, without agenda or expectation, that good things will happen.  I have a sneaky suspicion that Ms. Thaler and Ms. Koval are just trying to make us think more positively about our world and the folks we interact with in that world.

If we do this, I’ll bet we feel better about ourselves, about others, and about the whole deal … how manipulative of them …

Change Ourselves By Acting Nice, Which Changes Our Perspective, Which Makes Us Happier … it couldn’t be this simple, could it?

Wondering about a radical idea for living and working together in the Heartland …
