“It Takes A Village …”

… So says Beverly Kaye and Julie Winkle Giulioni in “Help Them Grow or Watch Them Go”

So, you may be asking “What ever happened to self-reliance, rugged individualism, and all the other American ideals?

They’re still around and properly revered.   They are just not enough by themselves.

Career Development is and should be a community event.  When only the employee and the manager are involved, we are missing some essential support and knowledge from coworkers, customers, family,  and others.  The old model of closed-door meetings and secrecy (often touted as privacy) about what is happening to who is no longer valid, if it in fact ever was so.

When you, as the manager, is the only one who knows what is happening, I have news for you … it’s not happening like you think or expect, and may not be happening at all.

The more sources of information the employee and the manager have, the more conscious support is made available, and the more open the process becomes, the more effective it will be … which is a good thing, right:)?

Enjoying the support of my village in the Heartland ….
